Bolivian Expat in the US

by Oscar
(Fayetteville, NC, USA)

Hi! I'm a Bolivian living in the US for more than 20 years, obviously a US citizen. I worked, and lived and worked without any rest and now I'm close to retirement and thinking about returning to Bolivia but planning to live close to other US/EU Expats.

Need to get some advice on Samaipata and opportunities to find a rural property or track of land with an small cottage that I can buy or rent to buy?

Also, if you can give me any information on how can I use my degrees in Political Science (Government), and Psychotherapy (Counseling)in that region.

retiring in samaipata
by: GoSouthExpat

Hi Oscar. Samaipata has become something of a retirement haven among expats in Bolivia, mostly European. Because of this the town has seen quite a bit of growth and there are many nice improvements too. It continues to be mostly a tourist stop and foreigners building nice small hotels and great restaurants have had a lot to do with this. The great thing about Samaipata is the pleasant climate, gorgeous surroundings, and proximity to Santa Cruz (although what used to be a 2-hour drive is now 3-4 because the road has not been well maintained and landslides have damaged it). In addition, there are some very pretty properties for sale in Samaipata.

Still, Samaipata continues to be very small, which seems to be what expats living there like most about it. However, if you're looking to use your degrees there I'm not sure you'd have a very large market there for that. You would also have to find out if your degree in counseling would be recognized here and if you would be allowed to use it to set up as a counselor here. You could probably find that out by contacting the Bolivian consulate in Washington D.C. www.bolivia-usa.org

I suggest you take a look at the Samaipata pages on our sister site BoliviaBella.com where you'll find information on the town, the drive to Samaipata, hotels there, and more (even a property for sale).

I also suggest you copy the message you posted here and post it through our Living in Bolivia Forum at BoliviaBella.com as well, so your question will get double maximum exposure.
