Did you ship or fly with excess baggage?

by MissDenver
(Edmonds, WA)

As you know, the cost of shipping is really high. However, I can't come with just 2 suitcases :-D The cost of excess baggage is $200 each. Even with 7 extra bags it will cost $1,400 which seems like a lot (I'm on a tight budget). Can anyone tell me how or what they shipped/brought and the least expensive way to do it? Or did you keep things in storage back in the U.S. I have items I can't get rid of like keepsakes from my parents who've passed away and from my daughter in college. Thanks for your help.

shipping to ecuador

Look around for some "ethnic" south american or ecuadorian agency that provides services to latinos in USA. They provide sea freight in consolidated shipments. Good luck!

Check with your airline carrier to find out their policies about maximum weight per bag.

I believe that on American Airlines your checked suitcases can weigh up to 100 lbs.

Get big suitcases and get your 100 lbs. of stuff in each one!

Fly with excess bagage
by: Teresa

Dear Miss Denver and "to whom it may concern",

This is based solely on my personal experience / situation, which may be vastly different than yours.

*I live in Santa Cruz. BO permanently, and only return to the US every 4+ years. Maybe other cities are cheaper to ship things to.

*I am not writing about transporting furniture, fragile items or a huge amount of stuff.

I needed to transport new clothing from New York to Santa Cruz, Bolivia for my personal use.
I was visiting my family in NY and I was returning to Santa Cruz, BO, where I live permanently.

While in NY I purchased all the clothes that I would need for the next 4 yrs.

It was MUCH cheaper to fly them with me than to ship them.

Check w/your airline carrier and find out how many lbs. they will allow for checked bags and get a/some big suitcase(s) and fill it/them to that amount of weight.

Also find out how much they charge for additional bags/weight.

$200 was mentioned, but that still beats the price of storage or shipping.

Any breakable items could be brought in your carry-on.

I hope this helps you!
