Eating brains in Mexico

by Adam
(Lima, Peru)

I lived in Mexico for 11 years. Once I had the most delicious tacos on my way to work, at a little corner taco stand. (Mexicans eat tacos and drink Coca Cola early in the morning for breakfast). They were so good I ate five! Totally stuffed myself. It wasn't until I had finished that the vendor told me they were made from beef brain. It's so normal for Mexicans they hadn't thought to mention it. But they were so good I had to go and ask (sort of wish I hadn't, it really ruined the experience for me).

I guess that's one of those things you'd probably never experience in the U.S. and sort of follows your theory about how sometimes, even after living in a place for a long time and no matter how familiar we feel there, there will always be something to remind us that we're actually foreigners.

Great article by the way. Really enjoyed it.
