Medical & supplements in Cuenca!
by: Anonymous

Hola all!

When it comes to medical care be prepared for a totally different experience. I came here with a lifetime of chronic illness that went misdiagnosed in Canada. I became accustomed to what I call THE LOOK and the attitude and doctors basically wanting to put me on anti-depressants.

After just a few months here I am doing so much better. Surely the walking, fresh air, plentiful fruits and veggies and the laid back lifestyle are all helping but some credit must also be given to the health care practioners here. Prices are very reasonable. Wait times are generally short and the doctors seem to have all the time in the world. You will not feel rushed. They listen and there is NO look and NO attitude. They genuinely will try to help. My spanish is very limited but we have managed with interpreters or google translate.

Also be prepared to be treated as an equal. One doctor insists he is having us over for dinner....he wants to practice his english and teach us some spanish. Another doctor thought the coast was the best place for me to recuperate after a needed surgery and offered her condo. like I said be prepared for something totally different.

As for meds I am getting what I need. Supplements are another story but improving already. A few weeks ago I couldn't find GABA anywhere. Yesterday I was in a health food store downtown and saw that the owner had brought GABA in...she said she had many requests for it. We asked her to order in some items for us and she is doing so. The name of this health food store is FARMACIA RENACER at Borrero 7-21 and Presidente Cordova. Have your translations ready as they only speak spanish there.

In the meantime I found a GABA replacement in a product called LECHUGA EXTRACT. You can find it at AQUAMARINA, an antigue shop at Presidente Cordova 6-41 (down the street from the Farmacia Renacer). It is $5.00 a bottle and works well. They also have some natural shampoos, conditioners and cleaning products etc.

Hope this helps!

Adios.

Other expats in Cuenca
by: Mistymeaner

Hola all!

I continue to read posts saying people see no other expats. Each and every time we venture out we see expats. We do tend to do most of our exploring and shopping downtown. All I can say is head downtown and open your eyes. They are out there....some responsive and outgoing and others keeping to themselves but they are there!

Adios! :)

Rentals
by: Mistymeaner

Hola all.

I am no expert but have learned a few things since arriving in Ecuador. Unless you want to pay top dollar for a rental stay away from Realtors or anyone else claiming to be in the know. You should not pay more than $150.00-$400.00 for an unfurnished rental and $400.00- $800.00 for a furnished one. What you end up paying depends upon your tastes, needs, location and how savvy you are. We have a perfectly charming 2 bdrm, 800 sq ft, furnished rental 10 minutes from downtown with a yard of our own for $400.00 a month. Check craigslist Ecuador as well as OLX.com which is the Ecuadorian equivalent of Craigslist. Also keep your eyes open for rental signs when you are out and about in areas you like.

Now if like us you need a place to stay while you look for a rental be prepared to pay more for a short term rental and you will need to get that booked about three months ahead.

It is a fact that there are GRINGO prices. Hook up with a good interpreter and have them help you with initial inquiries. Many locals are not so crazy about expats because we are driving property prices up. Do not be part of the problem by paying 2 and 3 times the going rate. No matter how good a price you 'think' you are getting trust me when I say you will still be paying more than they would get from a local! No matter what try to negotiate the price down and trust me, they will act all insulted and give you a long list of why the apartment is worth what they are asking. They want expat renters and if you are at all in doubt about the price they are asking walk away. Trust me the price will come down. Adios!

Need Informations
by: Claude

Hi ladies and gentlemen in Cuenca,

My wife and I plan to join you sometime in May. We plan to stay for 3 months to check Cuenca as a place to retire and relax. From what I read and heard from my brother, it seems to fit. My brother, after 3 trips, decided to build a house on the coast of Ecuador.

Info needed:
1)List of a couple of hotels to stay while looking for a furnished apartment or condo. What is the cost per day and their contact info?

2)A reliable realestate agent to help us find a decent place with cable TV, WIFI internet and all the usual appliances washer and dryer included.

3)Location of this place should be close to shopping and away from noisy traffic. What is the approximate cost of such a place?

4) what type of ID or papers needed if we decide to stay and apply for residence as retired people?

Thank you for any assistance you can give us.

Claude

Moving to Cuenca
by: Diana

I will be there in a year, leaving Austin, TX, where I have been living for two years. I am studying Spanish. I have done a great deal of research and am continuously and relentlessly finding more information from various contacts and getting more contacts from them. I will not be doing anything that is not well thought out and well planned.

I'm a single woman, who was an organic farmer for 20 years in WI. I plan to come to Cuenca, rent a small place and look for a house or apartment to buy. I will be spending part of the year in Cuenca and want a home that I can rent out for the rest of the year when I return to the U.S.

If you can help me with any information about areas of the city that would be safe and comfortable, apartments for rent, houses or apartments (small and reasonably priced) for sale, I would appreciate it.

Please write to Diana at dianahialeah@gmail.com.

I need an expat partner for a Gourmet venture
by: Marco Mendoza

Hi respectable GT forum,
I'm a Peruvian born, emigrated to the US since 1980, and recently found myself out of my job of 15 years as a House Manager for a wealthy American in San Francisco CA, and trying to partner up with an expat who'll love to me immersed in an Anthropologic, and socio cultural food business operation that would feature Andean fusion cuisine with ancient cooking techniques used by the first pre-Colombian cultures of this two wonderful Andean countries.

I'm open for a diverse type of scenarios that would range from being a working partner, to co-owning, to renting together, or any other modality an interested would be partner may think about.

I'm looking for an strictly American who's not so concern on the bottom line, but who'd like to be hand on as well in the sourcing, preparation and execution of my project from start to finish.
The concept would be a Restaurante Campestre, a very well accepted venue by any South American household where it would give any local family and the tourist community the chance to get out of the city for a weekend country Gourmet experience featuring excellent wholesome food, cooked using ancient pre- Inka ways. If any body'd be interested, please contact me at:
marcocusco@sbcglobal.net, or call me at my cell: with Claro pre pay: 0981-100487. I'm in Cuenca right now, and I need help in preventing my return to the US. I know my start up idea would be a great hit amongst gringos and locals alike.

Peruvian food rules! Have you tried it lately?
Hope to read answers and take your phone calls soon. Saludos!

Marco (The Inka Chef)

In Santa Inés Clinic, Dra. Andrea Astudillo does a great job as an otorhinolaryngologist (ear, nose neck, trhoat ). She is a great surgeon and her prices are afortable.

Coming to Cuenca next month - need local contacts
by: Lynne

I am considering retiring to Ecuador (Cuenca is my top choice) and plan to be in Ecuador December 17-27 to confirm my very positive impressions and check out living arrangements/apt. rentals, community and lifestyle, healthcare, and potential teaching opportunities. I’m hoping to connect with local expats, realtors, schools, etc., while in Cuenca if possible. If anyone has suggestions, or could point me in the right direction toward making contacts, I would be very appreciative. It would be my pleasure to buy drinks or share a meal with anyone willing to let me pick their brains. I can be emailed at lbzelasko@yahoo.com.
Thanks for any help offered– I’m really looking forward to experiencing Ecuador next month!

by: Dan & Chona

My wife and I from the US came to Cuenca a week ago to make our decision to move to Cuenca. We have 2 weeks left and have not seen anything more than the historical district which we truly love. We need to have a business of some type to keep us all busy.

Thinking about moving
by: Jim & Connie

We are seriously considering a move to Cuenca in the next two years. I am retired U.S. Navy and approaching my senior status (65). We would like to come down this coming year for a visit and look at property, both rental and sale. We lived in Panama for three years while in the Navy and loved it. The weather is a huge factor in our choice of Cuenca. Looking for some expats to converse with and ask the tough questions. February and Carnival sounds like a good time to visit. Or is it? We are currently totally retired and have to decide every morning to either roll over or roll out. Any suggestions on where to book lodging would be appreciated.

Is it unusual to wait so long for a visa in Ecuador?
by: Worried in Baños

Hi, We arrived in Ecuador mid February 2012, and immediately applied for a retired persons visa through an attorny in Quito. We were told we would receive the visa at the end of May, 2012. Now, we are still waiting as of the first week of July and have been told we are in the system, and ¨Don´t worry¨.

The excuse we are hearing is--there was a delay because of the new director.

What is the average time others have had to wait to receive their visas in recent months? Are we the only ones? Is this unusual?

Cuenca vs. Panama
by: Anonymous

Katheryn - my wife and I were looking at both Panama (western) and Ecuador specifically Cuenca). We decided Ecuador was a better bet due to the lower cost of living and a lower price to "purchase" residence there vs. Panama. The initial investment required in Ecuador is $25K vs. $100K in Panama. Prices are lower as well.

I recently visited and must say the local people are very nice as well. I never heard a coarse word between any 2 people on the street in over a week spent in Cuenca.

Just my opinion.

Cuenca vs. Panama
by: Anonymous

Dear Katherine, Is your husband considering the weather in Panama? It's too hot! And the security? There's no way to compare Cuenca with Panama. But why not go to stay a week in Central America and 2 days in Cuenca to make your best decision. Ragards.

Leaving the US
by: Katheryn

Hello,

My husband and I are seriously considering a move to either Cuenca or somewhere in Panama.

I have read mostly very good things about Cuenca and pulled in that direction. My husband tends to feel Panama may be a better choice. Money is a factor in making visits to consider both places, so we are trying to pre-determine which place we think may be better suited for us.

Just wondering if anyone else were pulled by the two countries and what made them decide on Cuenca.

Needing local assistance
by: John K

I'm going to be making my way through Ecuador Aug 10-27 to scope out some places to buy or rent. I've lived in S America several times, though not in Ecuador.

I'll probably spend a few days in Quito, then a week each in Cuenca and Ibarra.

My question is that I need to hire a local resource (i.e. guide) in Cuenca with a car who could show me property and answer some questions about living in Cuenca etc. Would anyone happen to know a person who might be interested in showing me around town for a week on a dedicated, for-hire basis?

Thanks very much!

Just back from Cuenca
by: Dean Chancey

I just returned from Cuenca less than a week ago. Wow. What a beautiful place. The weather is really second to none. Clearly, the Equadorian government does NOT have a hidden agenda. I felt more freedom in Cuenca than I have in 20 years in America.

David, I don't know what your religious affiliation is but I attended the iglesias de San Alfonso on P Borerro near the central park. This is a catholic church and even though I stood out like a sore thumb - the Cuencanas made me feel very much at home.

Good luck.

Looking for canine blood donors
by: Gustavo Mora.

Hi, I am a veterinarian, work at Clinica Veterinaria Mora, we are reaching out for help.
Two weeks ago we started a campain in order to have a data base of dogs which would be able to be blood donors.

If you guys have a dog over 40 pounds and it is up dated with deworming and vaccines, your pet could be a donor.

There are quite a few dogs that nedd a blood transfution and some of them saddly dye because we are not able of getting blood quick enought.

If you subscribe your pet as adonor, at the clinic you will receive 20% discount in medicall and surgical procedures, after yor dog has donated for the first time and it last untill the patient is alive, it does not matter if your pet was a donor once.
Please, contact us in Cuenca, Ecuador at the following phone numbers:
072804962, 072863209, 072801771.
You could reach me in the net as gustavomoracastro@yahoo.com.
Visit us at www.veterinariamora.com

It is better if you contact us in the morning or early in the afternoon, up to 15:00 hors, because there is a person who speaks english and it becomes easier to understand each other.
We rely on you guys, please lend us a hand and help us to save lives. Your pet some day could need it.
Have a good day.

Future Expat
by: David Macleod

My son Steven and I are coming for the first time next week. We live in Snellville (Gwinnett). I really do not like what is going on in the USA right now, and for the past year, I have been researching about life in Cuenca. I used to live in Miami where I was part of a missionary church, so I speak Spanish a lot more than most gringos, but still I am not fluent.

We are very concerned about the direction the USA is headed, and we want to have one foot out of the country as the currency is debased. I understand that Ecuador also uses the US dollar reluctantly, but I feel that the local economy around Cuenca and the food supply should remain intact (supply and demand), even as the dollar becomes toilet paper in the USA. The food supply in the USA? I don't think so. In Ecuador, there is no concerted effort out there to totally destroy the country, unlike the USA. Ecuador is simply not a target.

Anyway, we are coming to Cuenca next week and will stay about 2 weeks. We want to check out everything and determine if I should rent a place down there initially as an "escape" from America. I plan to do some freelance work and even some gold prospecting. I am also a writer. I am a CPA, but am TIRED of that field. This past tax season really opened my eyes more than ever about where the USA is headed. A real wake-up call.

We are also looking at attending a church in Cuenca that has a gigantic impact on the city. I think that for many, being involved in a church is an excellent way of assimilating into life in a city and culture. Also this church has a language school, so I want to check it out.

We cannot wait to come to determine once and for all if Cuenca is for us.

Problems with Cuenca
by: Anonymous

I have to concur with that poster who says Cuenca is not for them. Ecuador does not live up to the hype I have been presented with as well. I would rather spend more money to live in a clean environment, good internet connections, no power outages, and food that I can actually get a wide variety from and eat. My experience here has been grossly disappointing and unfortunately I think most of you are just trying to kid yourselves into thinking life is great here. Whatever....to each his own.

Rest of the story
by: Anonymous

I am sorry for mother who posted how much she disliked living in Cuenca. She obviously made a very hasty move here without checking out those things that were important to her and her family. I also get the impression, that there is more to her story, that she is not revealing.

Mar 07, 2012
to anonymous Feb. 29 re: anonymous Jan. 26
by: Anonymous

If there was any arrogance in either posting it seems to have been in the response, rather than the original. It is sad that the Jan. 26 poster had such a bad experience, and perhaps it might have been said in a kinder way. Unfortunately, when upset we all too often lose our equanimity. I hope that the Jan. 26 poster finds a more comfortable lifestyle wherever he/she settles. And, I hope that the peaceful and friendly environment I have so far found in Cuenca helps the Feb. 29 poster to find a less confrontative way to approach others concerns.

Need honest help finding Condo
by: Nancy & Walt

We have just arrived in Cuenca today (2/29/12) and need help finding a nice furnished 2 bed/2 bath condo to lease. We like the old city near the big stairs. We are concerned about getting ripped off on the price and could use help/advice. No pets, a river view, walking distance for groceries and shopping. We think we want to retire here - from Nebraska/Texas but spent 5 years in Iraq supporting the troups. Just retired and are looking for that special place. Thanks - any help appreciated! Cuenca Spanish Language Schools?
by: gravel

I am looking for information about the many Spanish language schools in Cuenca. Is there anyone who is already taking classes and could recommend a particular school or teacher? I am looking for upper level instruction for myself, second year high school Spanish for my 15 year old and beginning Spanish for my 11 year old. I'm a teacher myself and would be willing to pay for a talented, experienced instructor to engage and push my kids. We'll be in Cuenca for a month this summer.
Thanks for your help.

My opinion for aspiring expats...
by: Anonymous

Hola! I am just about to leave Cuenca Ecuador. This is a post of my own personal opinion on Cuenca. Many love it here...I am not one of those!

I came to Cuenca to find an escape of the rat race in america, to find a more modest, honest, and humble culture to raise my children in.

There are so many nice things about cuenca. Most people are friendly and I feel safe here. EXCEPT when I try to cross the street with my little kids in tow..then I do NOT feel safe, and I do not feel like the people here are friendly anymore! Its like they have a personality transplant and turn really evil when they get behind the wheel! Its life or death to cross the street! LOL!! But its seriously bad enough for me NOT to want to stay. But that is only strike ONE.

Also things here are NOT that cheap. Yes, many things are LOW QUALITY. Try to buy clothes and shoes!! Very difficult.

So many people are out to rip gringos off. Its uncomfortable! Taxi drivers will charge you $5 for a $1 ride or MORE. If you tell them NO and offer less, they get angry. The traditional women on the corners selling fruits will rip you off with no guilt. Real estate agents (whether american or bilingual ecuadorians) are here to rip you off. They will try to get you in a house for double or TRIPLE the monthly fee for an ecuadorian, so they can profit off of it.

It is difficult to get internet access at your house unless you are a citizen. The internet is really very very slow. It cuts off every few minutes, depending on the clouds!

The SMOKE from the cars and buses is CRAZY! There are dead cows in the rivers upstream. Food is hard to buy here if you are a "picky" eater. Like me...I eat organic and do not eat pork. VERY hard to find that stuff here.

The women dress like hookers, sorry to say! From toddlers to women in their 50's, they all wear TIGHT painted on clothes! Like they are always trying to catch a man! And they make out everywhere. Teenagers make out in front of anyone and everyone. THere is not much modesty here!

BUT..it IS pretty, well the mountains and rivers are pretty. But the city of Cuenca is NOT very pretty. The houses are AWESOMLY made...so beautiful with quality wood and stones. BUT it reminds me of MANSIONS in the GHETTO. Graffti everywhere...delapataded buildings everywhere...etc..etc... BUT it is a nice experience...just not to LIVE for me and my family.

Air quality
by: Terri

Am visiting Cuenca right now and am disappointed that in the books and Internet sites I read prior to the trip, no one mentioned the awful air quality in Cuenca. The busses belch out black smoke and I doubt the cars have any emission control devices. Thank goodness for the EPA in the states. I'm suffering from a sore throat and was in bed for a couple of days. I have a lingering cough and now wear a mask to keep from breathing in the pollution. Would not return to Cuenca.

In response to the critics
by: Joseph

I have gotten a lot of feedback from my comment about immigration lawyers in Cuenca. To set the record, straight not every single lawyer in Cuenca is bad. But your chances of finding one that will give you your money's worth is like flipping a coin. So, you can get offended and talk about generalizations and so on, but the bottom line is when it comes to getting things done right, by people who know what they are doing, you have a better chance by contacting me than by taking a chance with a lawyer in Cuenca. I get contacted almost every week by someone who is asking for my help because their lawyer in Cuenca isn't getting the job done. I'm sorry that the truth hurts, that's life.

Your words: "Don't go to ANY of the lawyers in Cuenca cause they will over charge you and frankly they don't really know what they are doing." Do you honestly know EVERY attorney in Cuenca and have first hand experience they ALL overcharge and are incompetent? Impossible. I agree with Maite. You should be ashamed of posting such insulting generalizations. There may be SOME lawyers in Cuenca who aren't good at Visas and overcharge, but your blanket statement they all do it, is ridiculous. I find your comments suspicious since you are trying to drum up business for your "friend". Try to get business for him by talking about how good he is and that his prices are reasonable without putting down every single lawyer in Cuenca! That's how ethical PROFESSIONALS market their services.

What did you do about shipping?
by: MissDenver

I have researched many forums and the bottom line is that it's too expensive to ship my household goods. However, I can't imagine arriving with 2 suitcases and giving up everything I own. The airline I'll be flying charges $200 per bag in excess of 2, so 7 boxes will cost $1,400. Do you think this is the best way to ship? I have gotten quotes from shipping companies that are all more than I can afford. What was your experience and how much did you ship? I have things I cannot let go of like my daughter's childhood keepsakes (she can't take them because she's in college in a dorm) and mementos I inherited when my parents passed away. Your advice is appreciated as this is the only issue I'm struggling with.

I am going to be there end of October - around the 25th. Need a place to rent and place to do Spanish immersion AND I'd love to meet some of you guys! Really interested in making Ecuador my home but beginning is a bit nerve wracking. I'm from Idaho and love to explore and check out the animals and definitely want to go to Galapagos or islands like them without large expense. I dont' want to be disillusioned so please respond if good hearted and not wanting to "charge me for a consultation!' Can't believe what's happening with the greed - good hearted folks prone to laughter respond! Thank you!!

Relocating to Cuenca
by: Bob

My cousin and me will be relocating to Cuenca next year as we will both be retired at that time. We would like to find out as much information as we can about living there before we move. We a both too old for surprises, so any help and information someone is willing to give us will be appreciated

Cabeceo?

I am a recent transplant to Cuenca seeking to dance tango in a social and friendly atmosphere. I'll settle for any class. Where can I find a teacher or a milonga close by?

Need a SUV to replace the one we have...
by: Bob & Roxanne

Howdy Folks...Roxanne and I have seen our poor SUV slowly disintegrate here at the Coast. We need to replace it.
If you are thinking of moving on and selling your SUV, we would love to hear from you. We don't want to buy here at the Coast, because we just don't know how the insidious salt air has affected any car that is for sale here.
We will be visiting Cuenca later in September.
Please drop us a line at bobnrox@gmail.com if you are interested. Thanks mucho...

Visa
by: Anonymous

I agree with Maite. I used a local lawyer here in Cuenca, great results. Four weeks total for my visa, cedula & censo. Charged much less than the lawyers in Quito with better results. I would like to hear from anyone receiving everything from start to finish in less than four weeks. You don't have to go to Quito if you have the right lawyer.

¿En Serio?
by: Joseph S.

DEAR FRIENDS
by: Maite

RESPONSE REGARDING VISA RESIDENCY BY: JOSEPH S.
As a Cuencana I am offended, I know there are many good attorneys in Cuenca, and some that are not. Your comments are not polite and are not welcomed here.
In Cuenca we do not gossip about people, how dare you come to our country to talk bad about our professionals? In the U.S.A. it is very expensive what a lawyer charges by the minute?why don?t you appreciate our HOSPITALITY?
The attorney?s in Ecuador are inexpensive comparing to what the attorneys charge in the U.S.A. per minute.
God forbid that more people with your attitude come to Ecuador.
If you want to do business you are more than welcomed, but if you want to gossip about other people go back to your country.
I love America, I love the United States, and I love my country.
Maite

COMPU FACIL
by: Anonymous

I wanted to share the experience I had at Compufacil. I bought a printer that did not work. I went to return it and they would not give me my money or a new printer. They kept the printer for over a week. I made four visits to the store to see what the situation was and each time they had an excuse. Now they let me know they fixed it and I could pick it up. I don't want a repaired printer. I paid for a new one. When I checked into the store they are middle men and sell older models. Mine was a 2005 model. BEWARE FRIENDS OF THIS STORE

by: Gamal Dillard

Hi, My name is Gamal Dillard, and starting the second week in January, I will be hosting a bilingual radio show on 100.1 FM on Sundays from 11:45 am until 1:45pm.

The show will include music, comedy, commentary, news back from the States, adjusting to life here in Cuenca, etc. I first came here in 1998 as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the coast, and returned over 2 years ago.

Cuenca in August 09
by: JohnP

Hello everyone,

I have been in the Gringo Tree mailing list for several months, and now the time is approaching when I actually get to visit Ecuador and experience the charm of Cuenca.

I definitely want to attend the Friday night gathering and want to meet many new friends while I'm there. Not sure yet where I'll be staying or how I'm going to get there from Quito safely (if by bus). Anyway, please say hi if you feel like assisting a gringo get acclimated, as I do not know much Spanish yet, which I'll be studying in your beautiful city.

Thank you. BTW, I'm from U.S. (Idaho) and traveling solo.
