Beware
by: Anonymous

People coming to Cuenca for the first time needs to stay away from Martha Abril, she will cheat you out of your money. Her prices are extremely high for Gringos. She will take your money and deliver you nothing, or charge you three times as much as needed because you are a Gringo. She is very unsavoury in her dealings, she will tell you what she paid for it and try to sell it to you while lieing about how much she paid. She has taking money from people and delivered nothing, beware.

Bananas Cafe Recommendation - Cuenca, Ecuador
by: Purvis Jackaon

As a frequent traveler to various global destinations, I guess I am somewhat spoiled by good and varied restaurants. Although I have found several high-end places with very good food in Ecuador, the majority of smaller places have been so-so at best. I have been absolutely delighted by the food, service, and ambience at Bananas Cafe on Calle Larga. The lunch specials are superbly prepared, and service is fast and friendly. I have been in Cuenca for 18 days and hate to leave because it is such a comfortable, friendly place. Bananas Cafe has been both a savings grace for delicious and affordable food and a terrific place to meet visitors and resident ex-pats. I will miss the lunch specials and friendly faces as I travel on to the coast.

Note from webmaster: Thank you. We have copied your restaurant review to our Dining Guide page for other travelers to see. We encourage all expats to click on the "Dining Guide" tab on the right side of our home page to review any restaurant in any South American city.

Looking for Missing Friends in Cuenca
by: Sharon Ferguson, Sarasota, Fl, USA

Two of my friends moved to Cuenca on Oct. 30. They rented an apt. at Edificio Margaritas 1, Departamento 404. I have not heard from them since Nov. 1 though they were to respond to my emails daily.

They are: Doug and Jennifer Correll. Doug is 72 and Jennifer 65. I don't know how to get in touch with them. I have this phone number: 011-47090227 but can't make it work to contact me. They are friends of "Judie and Nolan". If you read this and are in Cuenca, please try to help me.

---------------------
Webmaster notice: these persons have been located.

My email is: shafergie@gmail.com

I am beginning to worry about them and wonder why I haven't heard from them. If you can give me information on how to contact them, please email me.

Thanks.

Thank you to everyone who took the time and wrote such helpful and informative responses. We are now more informed on what to do, and we will be prepared to leave when all our documents arrive. wasted time
by: frank

You can see everything Cuenca has to offer in a day or two. You'll also find that local folks will pretty much ignore you whether you speak the language or not. Cuencan's seem to prefer not to engage outsiders and expats.

Electronics are very high priced and so is anything else that's imported at the supermarket.

I've moved on and have said goodbye to a very sleepy place that just didn't have quite enough for me.

Zest for life and Cuenca, Ecuador
by: james

If you truly have a zest for life then Cuenca's not the place for you. It's a sleepy lifestyle that adds nothing to your life and you, like so many others, will eventually move on to other places. If you're ready for a lot less input than you're used to, and your zest for life has ended, then Cuenca's the place for you.

Breanna Michelle Clemens
by: Anonymous

We are desperately looking for two young women that entered Ecuador June 2, 2012.

They were suppose to return home in early Sept and never made it to CA....

We believe them to be involved with a religious cult ran by Benjamin and Keegan Juniper who starve, sleep deprive and brainwash young girls in Ecuador and these woman cannot get home... They encouraged my young daughter to leave her husband and child and have isolated many young woman from their families..the UTUBE channel is "kindlethefireofgod"...
The American Embassy is looking for these two individuals, Benjamin and Keegan Juniper...if you have any information, please get ahold of the Embassy in Ecuador..
Thank you....

Stay Away from Villa Nova Inn
by: Thomas

Recently stayed 2 nights at Villa Nova Inn. After moving into our new apartment, we realized some items were missing from our luggage...a cell phone & a small bag of women's jewelry. We are
certain they were taken from our room at the hotel. The hotel has been notified they have a thief working there, but to this point they have not even responded. Do not stay there & do not recommend to anyone...you'll be ripped off !

Pilar Is a Thief
by: rbrowncuenca@gmail.com

Do not use Pilar for any of your Ecuadorian needs. She, and her family, are crooks. In my first 35 days in Ecuador they managed to scam me out of nearly a thousand bucks. I know she has recently moved her little "operation" to Cuenca, from Quito and Manta. STAY AWAY. YOU WILL LOSE MONEY.

I have been here two years since then and have had very little trouble with people separating me from my pension, but this chick is a pro at it.

If you see one of her ads.... run!!!!

Hello, I am a professor of sociology at St. Thomas University, in Fredericton, Canada looking to interview North Americans who have relocated to Cuenca. My study is intended to build on our knowledge of how retirement is changing with the present generation of retirees and how international migration reflects some of these changes. I am also interested in building an understanding of some of the issues and challenges faced by the North American community in Cuenca.

I can be contacted by email, mhayes@stu.ca, while in Cuenca until August 14th. Looking forward to meeting you,

is that all there is?
by: James

Beautiful, springlike, and serine...could you ask for anything more?
I must say that having lived there there's simply not much to do after dark...or even during the daytime.

The Cuencan's don't seem to be interested in us gringo's at least to socialise or maybe even date us. Maybe it's just me but i have tried and just don't get much positive feedback...
I lived in other S american countries and it seems Colombia is more intune with getting to know and accept expats on mnay different levels.
At least that's been my experience.
If you are happy with less input then i suggest you try living there but it's not nearly enough for this expat.

Don't believe 1/2 what you read on line
by: Anonymous

We just came back from 10 days in Ecuador and we loved it. But if we were to believe everything we read on line we would have seen an entirely different country. The one big Joke that seems to be on most of the real peoples mind is International Lying I mean living magazine. You must understand this rag is in business to make money and tell you what they think you want to hear. Plus most of these forums are full of half truths positive and negative. I’m sure there is a grain of truth in most comments but the only way to find out anything is to go in person with an open mind.
Can you live in Ecuador on $650 a month? Yes if you want to live in a card board box down by the river. This number is ludicrous but it all depends on your idea of living/surviving. We met many financial refugees, typically couples who have moved to Ecuador to stretch their social security and on $2K a month you definitely can live a reasonable life not like a King or even a Prince but much better than you could in the USA.
We traveled all over, walked everywhere, got lost in a couple of places we should not have been, and though a little nervous, we felt just as safe as we would anywhere else in the world. We were never in any danger or threatened in any way. So to those who say you will get robbed on every corner go stand on any corner in the Bronx tonight in NYC and see what happens.
And to the lunatic who said you can’t get peanut butter in Ecuador are you blind? Supermaxi had Jiff and Skippy, plus a local brand and you can buy peanuts and make your own. In general the supermarket prices were the same as the USA, twice the price for locals but OK for Gringos.
As for the cost of housing, keep away from anything Gringo as the prices are inflated more so by the Gringos themselves praying on star struck retirees. Don’t make rash decisions based on 1 week in country as so many do, and for Gods sake make friends with the locals and learn the language. We met some very ignorant Gringos who had lived in Ecuador for years and never bothered to learn Spanish. These are the people who were living a “Spring Break” for old people. Cheap booze every day Party party party…Pathetic.
So to sum up, we loved it and will more than likely return and buy a house to retire in and I think a very realistic number for your dream retirement is $200K to buy in…lock stock and barrel, and $25k-$30k a year to live on and you are now approaching minor royalty status.

Traffic in Cuenca
by: caripito

Keep in mind that drivers in Cuenca are aggressive.
All the horn blowing you hear can be interpreted as: Get out of my way or/and move your ass!
Car drivers have no respect for pedetrians.
They are bigger than a person crossing in a crosswalk and they will hit you!
This is an observation of mine and there are certain drivers who do respect other people.
If you plan to ride a motor bike in Cuenca keep your wits about you.

Magnolia cafe-restaurant
by: anonymous

This is a great little place with the best coffee we had in a week in Cuenca. The ambiance is lovely, it´s spacious, modern, lots of windows and a lovely outside seating area on Plaza de Otorongo.

The owner Simon, speaks excellent English and is very helpful.

Try the papaya juice. He has a well trained staff, excellent salads, small meals, sandwiches and desserts.

If you are in Centro Historico, walk towards the Parque San Sebastien and the Museo del Arte Moderno, one there, turn towards the river and take the 90 steps down. Magnolia will be on your right. Look for red trim and a large magnolia flower on the window.

Gracia, Simon.

It is turn-key also.

unfurnished apartment
by: Larry

We just rented a furnished apartment in Cuenca for 2 months. While we were looking we heard about a really nice, new unfurnished apartment with 3 bedrooms, including a master bedroom with its own bathroom, and a maids room, and 2 terraces. We haven't seen it, but were told it's really big, 230 square meters, and right on the riverfront, with river views, with a rent of $600. That's less than we're paying, but we needed a furnished place.

A lot of people were helpful to us when we were looking so I thought I'd pass this along.

You can contact me at lsaunders@crocker.com, and I'll give you more information.

Beware of Nexus Language school.
by: James browman

I live and love it here in Cuenca.Today however I observed in person how some individuals such as the owner of the Nexus school thinks of Gringos. I have an Ecuadorian friend whom only speaks spanish and wanted to learn English. The school requires that a placement test be taken first which my friend took showing that she did not speak english. They put her in a class with an teacher who only spoke English. After one week and seeing my friend frustrated, I went to the school and met the owner. I explained to the owner that my friend needed a class with a bilingual teacher to which she became upset at me questioning their teaching methods. She stood up and said and I quote"All you gringos are alike. You come here and think you are better then us."

Secure Internet access
by: Tom

I have an opportunity to do some consulting work here in Cuenca with a US based company through their computer internet system. They use an access security system based on RSA SecurID which is a coordination of time between a remote fob and the home computer system.
My question is, has anyone used this or a similar system from Cuenca and if so what type of internet system did you use, ETPA, TV Cable or something else.

Thanks for any information you might have available.

Beware of local realtors
by: Anonymous

Before you choose a local to rent you an apartment ask lots of questions. everyone here is now a realtor and wants your money. make sure you get a lease in English and spanish and NEVER give a dime to the realtor until you speak to the owner and make sure the exact ammount the owner is requiring to move in. the lease needs to be notorized by a real notary here and recorded in the courts for it to be valid otherwise the owner can just decide to ask you to leave, change the locks and deny you gave them money. The realtor will keep your deposit as a commission and you will not see it again. Don't think you will live out the security if it is not returned because you will come home and your locks will be changed and the owner will tell you they never recieved your deposit because the realtor kept it for her commission. Even if you are here on a short term get a lease.
