If You Regret Relocating - Look for Signs
by Heather Markel
(New York, NY)
Sometimes, after you relocate, you may wonder if you made the right decision to move there. As you deal with missing friends and family, and trying to figure out how to start your life, you may also wonder whether things will get easier. These are the best times to pay attention to the world around you and ask for a sign.
I'm a big believer in signs - things that help you know you're on the right path, or gentle hints to turn around and try another one. They can be words, actual signs, a person you meet who tells you something that strikes a cord, a piece of mail that arrives unexpectedly, a phone call, just about anything. I find they can be extremely helpful when confronted with a difficult feeling or situation.
Here's an example. I recently moved to a new apartment. With the market as it is, it seemed like there was a lot of opportunity, and that I could keep holding out for the prices to drop. Eventually, though, my old lease expired, and I had to move on. When I settled on my current place, I was filled with doubt. I wondered if I had made the right choice. Would I like living there? Would I like the neighborhood? Would it be too noisy?....
The day after I moved, I went to work, and when I returned home that afternoon, I exited at my new subway stop. When I got to the street, I was greeted with a huge sign. In fact, it took up the entire street corner, and it was impossible to miss.
It said: "New Location, New Relationships, New Opportunities"
I could not have asked for a better (or clearer!) sign if I had tried. I felt like someone had just told me exactly what I needed to hear, and I felt deeply listened to. The effect was that my fears and doubts disappeared, and I gained a new motto. It inspired me, and made me happy with my decision, and then that confidence spread into the rest of my life. Signs like these can be pivotal at certain moments. They can make a transition to a new culture more comfortable, or help you find a way to make a bad situation better. So, if you're struggling with any fear or doubt after a relocation, try asking the universe to send you a sign, and make sure you pay attention for the answer!
