Looking for experienced advice to import our car or motorcycle to Cuenca Ecuador

by Edward
(Oregon, USA)

We're moving to Cuenca soon. Our 2007 Jeep Compass seemed to be 'allowable' for importation according to the Ecuadorian official website rules, but it has been denied by the D.C. Consulate. Is there a way to have our car approved? What about an old motorcycle, 1987 Yamaha 200cc, just to get around? If anyone can help, let us know, and thank you.

Importing Cars / bikes to EC

I don't know how old your post is, but I've been in Cuenca for 2 years. I tried to bring my 2010 Harleys in and I'll tell you ~ it's next to impossible. Anything you bring in must be "New" ~ new year model with less than 40 miles. You'll also have to pay a 60% tax on the vehicle (based on the Aduanyas numbers, not yours).
Bottom line ~ it's simply NOT worth the hassel and it will cost you far more money than buying here. I broke down and spent $24,000 on a motorcycle I could have bought in the USA for $16k ~ WELCOME TO ECUADOR !!

Good luck with your trip and your importation (if this wasn't a deterent)
