The World of Tupac Amaru

Equally concerned with the lives of ordinary Andean people and sweeping historical processes, this book unveils a complex colonial world of indigenous villagers and their Spanish neighbors from the ground up and in the process examines one of the most significant indigenous uprisings in the Americas. Black Rhythms of Peru

How Real People Ought to Live

This collection of the author's Peruvian Cashinahua studies is the product of nearly forty years of study. During the 93 months he lived among the Cashinahua, Kensinger was gradually converted from being a missionary-linguist sent to translate the Bible for them to being an ethnographer-student intent on understanding their culture and communicating this understanding to others. The timing of his arrival in Cashinahua territory in 1955 could hardly have been worse. Another outsider had visited them not long before and had introduced a devastating epidemic that resulted in the death of four out of five Cashinahua. Fear and suspicion of strangers was the natural outcome of this tragic event. Despite this inauspicious beginning, Kensinger came to be known and trusted. Observing and participating in the life of the people he learned their humor, attended their social and religious gatherings, hunted with them, and witnessed the cycle of birth and death. Even during a lengthy absence from the Cashinahua, Kensinger was able to maintain contact with them indirectly via other ethnographers. He recently revisited the group to observe at firsthand the changes that have occurred over the past forty years. During this time, the Cashinahua established schools in their communities, entered the national economy, and increased their population, while still maintaining much of their traditional culture--the way real people ought to live. Kensinger likes and respects these active, bawdy, complex "real people"--and so will readers.

People of the Volcano

While it now attracts many tourists, the Colca Valley of Peru’s southern Andes was largely isolated from the outside world until the 1970s, when a passable road was built linking the valleyâ??and its colonial churches, terraced hillsides, and deep canyonâ??to the city of Arequipa and its airport, eight hours away. Noble David Cook and his co-researcher Alexandra Parma Cook have been studying the Colca Valley since 1974, and this detailed ethnohistory reflects their decades-long engagement with the valley, its history, and its people. Drawing on unusually rich surviving documentary evidence, they explore the cultural transformations experienced by the first three generations of Indians and Europeans in the region following the Spanish conquest of the Incas.Social structures, the domestic export and economies, and spiritual spheres within native Andean communities are key elements of analysis. Also highlighted is the persistence of duality in the Andean world: perceived dichotomies such as those between the coast and the highlands, Europeans and Indo-Peruvians. Even before the conquest, the Cabana and Collagua communities sharing the Colca Valley were divided according to kinship and location. The Incas, and then the Spanish, capitalized on these divisions, incorporating them into their state structure in order to administer the area more effectively, but Colca Valley peoples resisted total assimilation into either. Colca Valley communities have shown a remarkable tenacity in retaining their social, economic, and cultural practices while accommodating various assimilationist efforts over the centuries. Today’s population maintains similarities with their ancestors of more than five hundred years agoâ??in language, agricultural practices, daily rituals, familial relationships, and practices of reciprocity. They also retain links to ecological phenomena, including the volcanoes from which they believe they emerged and continue to venerate.

Guaman Poma

In the midst of native people's discontent following Spanish conquest, a native Andean born after the fall of the Incas took up the pen to protest Spanish rule. Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala wrote his Nueva corónica y buen gobierno to inform Philip III of Spain about the evils of colonialism and the need for governmental and societal reform. By examining Guaman Poma's verbal and visual engagement with the institutions of Western art and culture, Rolena Adorno shows how he performed a comprehensive critique of the colonialist discourse of religion, political theory, and history. She argues that Guaman Poma's work chronicles the emergence of a uniquely Latin American voice, characterized by the articulation of literary art and politics. Following the initial appearance of Guaman Poma: Writing and Resistance in Colonial Peru, the 1990s witnessed the creation of a range of new studies that underscore the key role of the Nueva corónica y buen gobierno in facilitating our understanding of the Andean and Spanish colonial pasts.
