We are moving to cuenca, ecuador in march 2011. we need to arrange transportation for our 55lb dog and 3 birds. any suggestions? airline info? thanks, p.
I have been researching ways that I can relocate my pets (dogs)safely to Cuenca Ecuador without being in a baggage or cargo section of a plane. In the US there are several Pet Transportation/Relocation businesses who do nothing else but transport animals from the US to anywhere in the world. Look at these websites:

Re: Relocating with pets by: Holly
Check out the Ecuador Expat group on Facebook and in the discussion section I posted about my experience in taking my dog from Cuenca to Canada and back.
We also moved from Canada to Ecuador 2 1/2 years ago with our cat and went through essentially the same process as with our dog.
I don't know what country your from but my advice to anyone moving is to contact an Ecuadorian consulates/embassy. Then after you've contacted one cross reference the information they give you by contacting a different consulate/embassy. That's what I did both times I moved my pets and (so far) all the info I was given was accurate and I never had any problems.
I suspect that if you encounter any problems it will be with the airline because of the amount of animals you want to ship.
Good luck!
Oops, one more thing - I would NEVER ship my pet as cargo. Only as checked luggage or in the cabin with me. Once your pet lands in Ecuador there is the possibility of them sitting in the customs cargo facility for days. Ecuadorians often have a different view from North Americans/Europeans on how pets should be treated.

shipping animals to ecuador by: Penny
American Airlines, was what we took when moved to Cuenca two weeks ago. We had no problem with our Dog and Cat. All we did was two weeks before you leave you take your pets to the vet and get their certificate and then you go to the USDA vet in your State and they approve it and give all the things you need. As for Birds call your local USDA and they can tell you whether or not you can bring stuff into the country. I hope this helps.

About moving to Ecuador with birds by: Shelly
I have a Timneh African Grey parrot. He is a closed banded bird (a metal band that is placed around his leg) which actually serves two purposes: to demonstrate that the he is domestically bred, and therefore has not been smuggled into the United States, and to identify his origin. We plan to move to Cuenca Ecuador next year as well and I have not been able to find out any information about birds. I have call the Ecuadorian Embassy in Washington D.C. twice. They have said they would get back with me because they didn't have the answer, but I have yet to hearfrom them. A friend that already lives there talked to someone from the U.S. Consulate in Ecuador and they said it is a protected bird and would not be allowed. If anyone has any other information, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't know if I will move with him!

Relocating pets to Ecuador by: GoSouthExpat
Hello P.
You may want to check this page on Pet Relocation as it contains information on how to ship pets, what they need during the flight, and companies that provide pet relocation. It's very informative!
You should also contact the airline you will be using to be sure they inform you as to their restrictions and regulations. Each airline may have its own rules. If you haven't chosen an airline or reserved a flight yet, you might want to look here for Flight Deals.
You should also call an Ecuadorian Consulate in your country to be sure the birds you are planning to travel with are not restricted (avian flu, protected species, that kind of thing).
