Relocation Strategies 101 - Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

When you move someplace new, the word "new" will hit you a lot at the beginning! There will be a new grocery store to buy food, new restaurants, new people to meet, perhaps a new language, new activities, a new home...the list goes on and on!

One essential way to adapt to a new place is to step outside your comfort zone. What this means is, whatever your "normal" habits were before you moved, you may need to try some new approaches to welcome your new life. For example, if you're used to going places, and doing activities with friends, you may never have tried activities on your own. Well, if you're trying to meet new friends, and you don't know anyone yet, it's a good idea to attend at least a few events/networking opportunities on your own to get the ball rolling. Can't find anyone to see U2 while they're in concert in your new town? Why not buy a ticket and go on your own?

Venturing outside the every day can apply to every aspect of your life. Perhaps you will use public transportation, instead of driving, or vice versa. Maybe you won't have access to the same foods anymore, or perhaps restaurants are sparse, and you'll need to learn how to cook. For all of these reasons and more, it's critical that you allow yourself to try new things, and do them in new ways.

The rewards of stepping outside your comfort zone are often meeting people you otherwise would not have, discovering cultural differences you need to bridge, and learning a lot about local traditions. If you don't challenge yourself in this manner, you may end up resenting your move. It's impossible for everything to be exactly like it was in the home you left. The sooner you accept this, and try to move forward, the more successful you'll be adapting to a new life, and creating one you love!
