Safety for Expats in Ecuador

by Dave
(Jefferson, GA USA)

My wife and I are strongly considering retiring to the Cuenca area. one of the cautions that we have heard from people that have moved from SA to the US is the safety factor for gringos.

Can anyone comment on the safety factor, particularly in the Cuenca area. The US state dept has articles that would scare one into thinking there is a crook on every corner. Of course, we assume that is not the case, though it could hold true for some large US cities.

We are both in our sixties and would like to travel the country, learn the language, enjoy and learn the culture of the country and participate in the country as good citizens - expats.

The International Living articles rate the safety factor as 73 on a scale of 100. but with no real explanation.

Thanks for feedback.
Dave

I plan to move to Cuenca soon. I currently live in the Dallas Tx area. We, like other large cities, have a lot of crime, most of which is drug related. There are many areas of the city I will not go to even in the day time. But I can't afford to live in fear. I believe if you practice command sense and stay away from areas high in crime you should be ok. I do suggest that women not walk around at night by themselves. From what I have read and learned about Cuenca, it is safer than Dallas! The point is that there is danger and crime everywhere. Use common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

I think you should read www.retire-in-ecuador.com
and join the FREE newsletter to read their back issues. This couple live in Cuenca and give a very down to earth refelction on living in Cuenca.
I also see there is a seminar in Charlotte NC in January 2011 re Panama and Ecuador which may be of interest to you if you want to go and find out more.

Safety in Cuenca, Ecuador
by: Eti

Hello, My husband and I were in Ecuador for three weeks in November of last year, arriving in Quito and staying a week, going to Guayaquil for a few days and then going to Cuenca for ten days. I can tell you from our experience that we fell in love with beautiful Cuenca and found it to be very safe. We walked at all times of the day and night (of course with common sense as required wherever you may go). We rode the local city buses, took taxis and mingled with local Ecuadorian folks with no problem. I would definitely recommend Cuenca to visit, to live or to retire. We were not too keen on Quito although for the most part it is pretty safe, (too big, too much traffic, too much for our liking); but areas just outside of Quito were very nice. We were definitely not keen on Guayaquil at all (not safe feeling, way too big, way too much). Hope this helps. Have fun!
