by Mike
(USA)

I am interested in moving to Tarija, Bolivia. I currently live in the US. I understand the process as far as obtaining a visa, etc... I just need some verbal contact, what's the next step?.. what kind of monies do I need?.. how long will it take?...I would rather talk to someone versus email...can somebody guide me the "correct" way?

Moving to Tarija
by: Martin

Altiplano Bolivia, which is located in Tarija, can help with information about moving to Tarija.

Just email Altiplano.Bolivia@Gmail.com to make contact or follow the links from http://www.residencialaltiplano.com/altiplano_bolivia.html

Bolivia Bella is also a good source of reliable information, but specialise in Santa Cruz.

Retiree Visa
by: Anonymous

I hope someone is encouraging the Bolivian gov't to create a retiree visa that's simple to get. I'd live there year-round if I didn't have go jump through numerous hoops and spend alot on fees to do so. Spending my income there would be a benefit to Bolivia and I don't see Bolivia turning into Costa Rica if a few retirees ended up there.

getting residency in tarija bolivia
by: Anonymous

It usually takes all 30 days that you have on the travel visa so you need to start as soon as you get there. The cost is about $400 all told if you do the process by yourself. If you hire a lawyer or a "tramitador" to do it for you, they will add a fee. Could be about $100-$200 more.

About living in Tarija Bolivia
by: BoliviaBella.com

If you want to live in Tarija or anywhere else in Bolivia, your first step is to get a visa de objeto determinado (specific purpose visa) to gain entry to the country. If you come on a tourist visa you can't request residency.

Once you are in Bolivia, you have 30 days to turn in your application for residency, which has numerous requirements. You'll need bolivianos or dollars anywhere you travel in Bolivia.

Once you've gained your residency, which will initially be for one year, you may want to either look for work or set up your own business. To do this, you have to have a work permit which you get at the Ministerio de Trabajo. If you choose to set up your own business there is a lot of paperwork to do for that to register a new business.

To find a home to rent or buy in Tarija, you'll probably need the help of an "inmobiliaria" (real estate agent) even for a rental because Bolivia has no central or national property listing service. Each real estate agent lists the properties they are trying to sell or rent.

If you have any further questions, I'll be happy to answer them. Just contact me through my contact form on this page:
