Author: Peter Garant

There are all sorts of insurance available for the expat today, and the key is being able to choose the one that bests suits your needs. The following can help serve as a guideline to get you started.

Travel Insurance

For those that move around frequently, travel insurance is a must. When choosing one, make sure that they include the following options: first they should shoulder some of the costs of your travel in case something goes awry (cancelled flight, lost luggage) or even financial loss (in case of a natural calamity). Some of the better travel expat insurance plans even have health coverage options.

Sports Insurance

The growing popularity of extreme sports like bungee jumping, rock climbing or skiing among expatriates has given rise to extreme sports insurance. If you are the type who is into sports and other activities, you might want to get this type of coverage. However, different companies cover different types of sports, so be certain that the policy you buy covers you and your sport of choice.

International Auto Insurance

If you find yourself using your car very often to move from one country to another, then it might be best (and also in most places mandatory) to get insurance for your motor vehicle. There are now several firms offering these services so it is only a matter of finding the one that is most appropriate for your car.

Health Insurance

If you prefer to have a separate expat health insurance, it is best that you select the one that matches your expectations and necessities. Most countries, especially in Europe, have plenty of expat health insurance, but it is crucial that, as with all other types of insurance, that you read the fine print. Don't buy coverage you will not need.

Insurance Companies for Expats

There are currently several insurance companies that can provide and cover all the needs of the expat. Some of the most widely known are the following:

Expat Financial: this company provides health, travel, disability and life insurance policies for expatriates.

TFG Global Insurance Solutions Ltd offers insurance for expatriates working in high risk countries like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Alexander Forbes World Service is an arm of the Alexander Forbes Insurance Agency ('AFIA'), which specializes in offering motor insurance.

The Innovative Benefits Consultants is an insurance / broker / consultant that focuses on expats that travel frequently and are always on the go.
