What grade am I in?

by Mayra
(Long Beach, CA)

My four kids are in the middle of their school year here and will most likely be attending a regular school in Santa Cruz, Bolivia when we move there next month for three years.I will not be sending them to an American school. Do I advance them one grade or start them over their current grade? They are not too pleased about the latter option. I'd love some answers from those who have had this challenge.

Different school years
by: Anonymous

The new 2011 school year began in Bolivia on February 1st so that might be a slight problem depending on exactly when you arrive. They could want your kids to repeat their previous grades if they don't speak Spanish, but if they do, they will probably test into the next grade. You'll most likely have better luck with a private school than a state-owned school. Many of the private schools have curriculum that adjust to the Bolivian Education Law and at the same time they do their best to ensure the kids get the type of education they would need if they were to study at US or European colleges - because most of the kids who study at private schools in Bolivia do end up going to college overseas.

School for kids
by: Beth

I am a single mom with two girls. We came in December. My girls 10 and 12. They are attending Santana. They went up a grade and feel very proud. In Florida, which is the worst school system, my oldest daughter was put into special ed classes because she has ADD. So what??? Half the teachers in Florida have it.LOl...when we came here they tested her and she scored very high. She felt so good. Leave it up to the school and ask your kids how they feel. I think South America is actually more advanced and the teachers that teach here do it because they love it.
